Frances is the President/Founder of S.T.A.R.S. and the recent recipient of the “Eckerd Salute To Women Award”. Frances has also been recognized for her efforts by many including New York Newsday, and was acknowledged by Past President Bush as “A Point of Light”. Frances’ has been active in her community since she can remember and most enjoys her involvement with young people. With a Masters Degree in Politics and Government and a Certificate in Public Administration, Frances’ long time dream of starting a community based youth organization has become a vivid reality with S.T.A.R.S.
Peter has been Vice President of S.T.A.R.S since January 2002. Before then Peter served on the S.T.A.R.S. Board of Directors as the Athletic Coordinator from 1999-pressent, and in doing so, has held Volleyball clinics during the summer and Ping-Pong Class throughout the year. His coaching experience before S.T.A.R.S. includes many years of Basketball and Baseball. A life-long resident of Ozone Park, Peter is currently a broker on the New York Stock Exchange and the Co-Publisher of a popular neighborhood newspaper.
Dawn is an original member of the Board and currently serves as Treasurer. She is works for Avon Products Inc. as a Senior Merchandising Manager on the Jewelry and Watch team. Dawn is always willing to lend a helping hand. She has participated in many community-sponsored events such as our Beach Clean-Ups, Graffiti Clean-Ups, Halloween Hay Rides, Easter Egg Hunts and various fundraisers held by S.T.A.R.S. Dawn states, “she loves people and giving back to the community, she is extremely proud to be a member of the S.T.A.R.S. family.
Elvira is a 30-year-old lifelong resident of Howard Beach who has been involved with S.T.A.R.S. since its inception, and has been a board member since 1999. A graduate of St. John's University and its law school, she currently works for the civil defense law firm of Wilson, Elser, Moskowitz, Edelman & Dicker, LLP. Being a big fan and supporter of children and their development, Elvira takes great pride in her work and association with the S.T.A.R.S.
Tom has been a resident of Howard Beach since 1966. He is currently a Senior Trial Attorney for a prestigious Manhattan law firm, but has had a lengthy and rewarding career in the District Attorney's office. Tom participates in many charitable-athletic events. He sits on his local Community Board and the Wildlife Conservation Society where he is assigned to the Children's Zoo at the Bronx Zoo. He joined S.T.A.R.S. in November of 2002 because he "has always sought to impart my life experience and share my time with others." Tom added, "I derive immense satisfaction from teaching children what I have learned in my life, and learning from their unique, and often forgotten by adults, way of seeing things."
Joan Ford is a mother of three. Joan and her children have been involved with S.T.A.R.S. for quite some time now. Joan stated, "I believe S.T.A.R.S. is one of the best things that has happened to this community because it gives young people a place to go and things to keep them busy." Joan became a member of the S.T.A.R.S. Board of Directors because, "I wanted to be part of this team of dedicated people, so I too can make a difference."
